Below are the three different types of boiler you can have:

Combination boilers

Combination boiler

With a combination boiler (or combi boiler as they're commonly called) you gain the convenience of instant hot water at anytime. There are no hot water tanks. It simply heats the water as you use it.

Combination, or combi boilers are economical to run and give you the benefit of always having hot water. They heat water direct from the mains so there's no waiting for a cylinder to heat up. They are an ideal choice in small homes where there may not be room for a hot water tank.

High efficiency combination boilers are becoming an increasingly popular choice in UK homes and now account for well over half of all new domestic boilers installed in Britain every year.

System boilers

Combination boiler

A system boiler, often referred to as a sealed system boiler, just like a regular (conventional) boiler works on the principle of stored hot water via a storage cylinder housed in an airing cupboard. Fast response and more economical running costs. There is no need for water tanks in the loft, as with an open vent boiler.

Heat only (open-vent) boilers

Combination boiler

A heating only boiler provides central heating and hot water via a storage cylinder housed in the airing cupboard and a cold water tank in the loft.

A conventional condensing boiler system may have two water tanks in the loft and a cylinder in the airing cupboard. The boiler heats the cylinder and radiators in your house. Conventional boilers are also compatible with the latest renewable technologies such as solar thermal which could let you generate up to 60% of your hot water for free.

Open vent boilers, sometimes known as heating only boilers, provide central heating and hot water via a boiler, a storage cylinder housed in the airing cupboard and water tanks in the loft. They are the ideal solution for all house types - from a typical one bedroom/bathroom flat through to a four bedroom property with three bathrooms.
